No final decision was ever reached on whether the Eastern Towhee was truly a pure Eastern Towhee. They sometimes interbreed with Spotted Towhees where the range of the two species overlaps. This bird had no visible physical characteristics that would ID it as a hybrid, but it was heard making both Eastern Towhee and Spotted Towhee vocalizations. So we'll never know.
