2013 - Decorah Bald Eagles
Went on another trip to Decorah Iowa to visit this year's Bald Eagle family. I've been watching this pair on a web cam for the last three years. This year they decided to build a new nest across the street from their original one, where Raptor Resource Project had just finished putting up exceptional new camera equipment. A local who lived within scoping distance of the new nest helped out their fans by capturing video through his scope, so we were still able to see some of what they were up to. The parents continued to visit the old nest tree. which allowed us to see them on the web cam from time to time. The juvies, who have fledged, are now making appearances on the old nest cam too. When we arrived in Decorah on June 25, the two oldest eaglets had fledged, but the third had not. It fledged the day after we got there. That one had a lot of difficulty with landings. The nest location was not the best for fledging and returning to the nest for food drops. There was a lot of tree canopy in the way with branches too small to hold an Eagle. It was entertaining and also somewhat anxiety producing watching the learning process.
